Essay on inequality and poverty

In this essay I looked at: Whether economic growth reduces relative poverty and inequality

Changes in America, specifically in the workplace, are causing astonishing changes in our nation’s economy, expanding the gap between the rich and the poor. One of the main contributing factors to income inequality in America is technology. As technology is advancing, workers are being laid off or fired because their employers are now able to buy much cheaper technology to perform the specific tasks that the works were originally doing. A few decades ago, workers did not have to worry about being laid off due to technology not advancing as much, however it is expected that as time pasts by, technology becomes more advanced and efficient to save companies money. It is evident that the companies are only developing the most efficient way to gain a much larger profit for their own betterment, but it is costing lots of Americans their jobs. It would not be a smart idea for companies to choose not to invest in the newest and efficient technology because they can potentially go out of business due to other companies having that specific technology. Evidently, this is how a capitalist economy works in America. The problem is that as time goes by, it will become much more difficult than it is now to find a job because it can potentially be done by a computer or anything technology related. Therefore, many educated, hardworking Americans lose their jobs and are unable to rise out of poverty. All in all, it wasn’t their decision to become poor, but in reality it was the advancement of technology in our society that forced them into poverty.

If you want to be successful, you need an education. The reason why the rich is getting richer and the poor is getting poorer ties all into education. This broadening gap is making income inequality also increase due to the fact that the less educated women without college degrees are less likely to marry, living on one paycheck whereas… “College educated americans like the Faulkners are increasingly likely to marry one another, compounding their growing advantages in pay.” according to Two Classes, Divided by I Do. These two classes are designing diverging destinies where there is a gap in family structure, gaps in income, and gaps in parenting. Without two paychecks or two parenting perspectives, many children with single mothers tend to grow up in poverty and become dropouts in school. Without a male father figure, it can be even harder for children to not follow their destiny. It all comes down between a successful married couple vs. a poor degree-less mom and this is why assortative mating contributes to our income inequality in the U.S

Outsourcing has also eliminated much of the need for blue-collar workers in there United States. Larger companies will often give jobs previously filled by Americans to people in countries with significantly cheaper labor costs. Further elimination of job opportunities increases income inequality and therefore lowers the ability of people to remove themselves from poverty.

The extent of poverty and inequality remains a topic of enduring by our professional essay and effects of spatial inequality and poverty.

Closely related to poverty is lack of social mobility. I've seenthis myself: you don't have to grow up rich or even upper middleclass to get rich as a startup founder, but few successful foundersgrew up desperately poor. But again, the problem here is not simplyeconomic inequality. There is an enormous difference in wealthbetween the household Larry Page grew up in and that of a successfulstartup founder, but that didn't prevent him from joining theirranks. It's not economic inequality per se that's blocking socialmobility, but some specific combination of things that go wrongwhen kids grow up sufficiently poor.

In 2008 34% of South Africans and 78% of people in Swaziland lived on less than $2 a day. However the Gini index score for South Africa was 65 (2005) and 50.4 for Swaziland (2001). (The World Bank, 2012) This is a clear indication that poverty does not mean that a country is unequal. Also, we have to keep n mind that the history of South Africa, with regards to colonialism and apartheid, will always have an effect on the amount of inequality that exists in the country. Stewart et al (2007) asks a very relevant question, “Should we expect definitions and measurement indicators applied in one type of society to be transferrable to other societies?” This statement will now be answered by looking at how we measure inequality and poverty and what the social consequences of these socio-economic issues are. Social inequality is measured mainly through the Gini coefficient, a statistical measure of income inequality.
