DRAMATIC IRONY IN OEDIPUS REX Oedipus Rex is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles in the early days of antiquity and is based upon an even more ancient story in Greek mythology. Sophocles, knowing that his audience is aware of the outcome of the play, utilizes that knowledge to create various situations in which dramatic irony play key roles. To begin with, dramatic irony is when the audience knows the tragic truth before the characters do. Through Sophocles's use of irony he manages to avoid retelling an old tale, even though the audience is aware of the story's ending, they are intrigued by the irony present in the story. From the beginning of the play, Oedipus is ignorant of the dreadful acts he has committed: the murder of his father and marrying his mother. But the audience, watching the play, is already well aware of these facts.

Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex underlines Oedipus’s inability to escape his fate as well as his lack of freedom as an individual. Oedipus, who pursues the murderer of Laius to save Thebes from disease and famine, is unable to alter his fate of killing his father and marrying his mother. Though Oedipus tries to escape his fate by leaving Corinth, he unknowingly fulfills his destiny by killing his father at the three crossroads, engaging in incest, and producing incestuous children. Although Oedipus has free will to a certain extent, his impetus and irrationality are his tragic flaws. Oedipus is an individual who acts on impulse, disregards the power of a prophet, and accuses Creon of treason. Oedipus’s hubris is what leads to his downfall.

The Oedipus Trilogy was originally written by Sophocles and is meant to be told in a story-telling fashion. But this Grecian tragedy was revised and translated into English by Paul Roche and put into a novel form. The Oedipus Trilogy is a novel that deals with destiny and fate. The reader is shown a series of events plotted out from which Oedipus (the man who knows) cannot escape and leads him ultimately elsewhere. When we begin to read this story, we must remember that Greek society was based around myths and legends. They, much like today’s society, had the need to explain everything. Their myths were a way of explaining such things. They had a series of gods and muses and fates to explain why things happened the way it happened. They believed in a force greater than their own controlling their every move. Sophocles took their beliefs and used the Oedipus Trilogy to explore the irony of how the Fates work more closely. The Oedipus plays are separated into three main plays: Oedipus Rex (The King), Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone.
