Jean-Paul Sartre Existentialism and Humanism (London: Methuen 1973).
Annie Cohen-Solal Sartre: A Life (London: Heinemann 1988) is a fascinating biography.
Jean-Paul Sartre Being and Nothingness (London: Routledge 1969) is the classic existentialist text. Unfortunately it is extremely obscure in places. The best way to make sense of it is to use Joseph S. Catalono’s excellent A Commentary on Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness (University of Chicago Press, 1974) as a guide to the main themes.
Critical Essays: Anti-Semite and the Jew (1943), and ten essays, Situations (1-10) Basic Philosophy of Sartre Jean-Paul Sartre is considered one of the most important existential philosophers. Existentialism is the belief that there is no predetermined path, and we, as individuals, create meaning to our lives. We are conscious, self-aware beings, therefor we are responsible for our actions and lives. Sartre coined the phrase " L'existence Précède L'essence" or "Existence Precedes Essence," meaning that a human being, as well as human reality, exists before any concepts of values or morals. in short; a person is born a blank slate that they will define and create throughout their lives. Why I'm Obsessed with Jean-Paul Sartre I think Sartre is one of the best writers of the last 100 years. Whether or not you agree with his ideas, his works are beautifully written and philosophically intriguing. If you are interested in reading his works I'd recommend "Existentialism is Humanism," or "Nausea." Works Cited Sartre, Jean-Paul, The Words, New York, George Braziller, Inc. 1964

His perpetual pursuit of philosophical thought, literary creativity and, in the second half of his life, active political commitment, gained him worldwide renown and admiration. In spite of the fact that Franck Kafka (1883-1924) was the initiator of the Existentialist philosophy (Existentialism), Sartre is commonly considered as the father of Existentialism.
