First Impression: The Big Cheese Italian Restaurant lives up to its name. When you first drive up, the parking spaces are tight and the area is very crapped. But once you are seated and begin your dining experience you forget about all the things that are not ideal and enjoy the delicious meals that comes at the right time. For starters, the boys wanted Calamari ($9.95), 12- Wings ($9.95) and the adults had Caesar Salad-Full Order ($9.95). We knew immediately that we were in trouble with the amount of food that was placed on the table in front of us. The Calamari was fresh and not chewy according to the boys, it didn’t last long enough for the adults to taste. The Caesar Salad was absolutely phenomenal. The full size serving feed all three adults and the boys. The lettuce was nice and crisp, the hint of anchovy was just enough to have the essence hit the taste buds with just the right amount of bite. The cracked pepper gave it the right amount of spice and the dressing was sufficient to cover without drowning out the croutons. The addition of red onions to the salad enhanced the overall taste of the salad and we had a hard time stopping.

Afterward, when he was leaving the campus to have dinner with his hosts and a few of the better students, he and his party were attacked by a mob, with one professor suffering neck injuries that sent her briefly to the hospital. After arriving at the restaurant where they were to have dinner, they were obliged to flee, the mob having caught wind of their whereabouts. Murray, in his usual good spirits, noted with gratitude that the second restaurant, unlike the first, was provided with a full bar.

The menu, meanwhile, appealed to a broader palette of tastes. Like the French restaurants that, since the 40s, had set the standards for fine dining in New York, the Odeon offered ambitious, fashionable food and wine, along with crisp service. But for the formal and often intimidating stuffiness of those restaurants it substituted the boozier, more casual and convivial atmospherics found at the formidable Elaine’s, where the literary and show-business crowds still go, and at Mickey Ruskin’s many art and music hangouts, most notably Max’s Kansas City, inner sanctum of Andy Warhol and his Factory entourage in the 60s. And though the Odeon’s prices were geared for successful artists, not starving ones, those with more modest means and tastes—and those who couldn’t care less about the pedigree of their pea shoots—could always find a burger or a country salad on the menu.

No matter how delicious the food is, poor customer service can put a serious damper on the experience of eating out. Describe your interactions with the host and waiters, including whether they were polite and courteous, how well they answered questions about the menu and how quickly you received your dinner and drink refills. You might also consider the overall personality of the staff as well as the individuals you interacted with. A restaurant with chatty, personal waiters, for example, should be portrayed differently in your review than an establishment with speedy, no-nonsense employees.

Restaurant review essay

But can a restaurant really be of its place if it doesn’t bend and sway to the breezes of local tastes and local demands? I doubt it, and I doubt that my own ecstatic reveries (for the sake of argument, let’s assume that I would have enjoyed Noma Mexico as much as everybody else) would help on that front. I’d be another tourist, hoping to be knocked out with sensations that would carry over to the flight back to New York.

I reflexively want to be generous in my assessment of what the post-election Trump Grill says about the Trump presidency. Perhaps it’s a sign that Trump is in over his head, and a shallow, mediocre man who runs a shallow, mediocre business empire (and restaurant) would sink and implode, crushing the expectations of millions of his hopeful supporters. But watching Trump parade his enemies through the nearby lobby, taunting them with prestigious appointments only to cruelly humiliate them, I had to look over at the human cattle herd at the Trump Grill, overwhelming a well-meaning staff with their dreams of a meal fit for a president, and wonder if he cared about any of them, either.
